Welcome to Centennial Activity: Remembering 1967

The CentennialActivity.ca web site takes the opportunity of the 2017 Sesquicentennial to look back and establish a record of the numerous different ways that Canadians participated in sport and physical activity during the Centennial.

Centennial projects included:

+Infrastructure Projects

1967 saw the last major phase of recreational infrastructure building in Canada: arenas, pools, parks, and ski and hiking trails across the country.

+Official Projects

such as the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, and the Centennial Voyageur Canoe Pageant from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to Expo '67 in Montreal.

+Sponsored Projects

such as the Great Centennial Bathtub Race from Nanaimo to Vancouver, and the Canadian Ski Marathon from Montreal to Ottawa (both events continue to this day).

+Community Projects

Most communities in (Anglophone) Canada organized events and projects to celebrate the Centennial. Many of these involved physical activities ranging from parades (most communities) to construction of a UFO landing pad (St. Paul, Alberta).

+People's Projects

such as the Great Divide Ski Traverse from Jasper to Lake Louise, and Hank Gallant walking the Trans-Canada Highway from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

This is also a citizen history project, and we are asking people who were involved in sport and physical activity Centennial projects (or their children and grandchildren) to help us build a complete record.

You can contact us to tell us more about the projects already posted on the site, or to tell us about projects that we may not have found during our research. Copies of photographs, film, audio and other memorabilia are all welcome.
